When building work on the church began in 1882 six different kinds of stone were used basically: stone from Montjuïc, for the exterior of the building, the rock that best characterises the Gaudinian period; stone from Garraf, for the masonry of the foundation and the filling of the exterior ornaments; stone from Lleida, for the sculptures on the Nativity façade; stone from Vilafranca, for the interior ornaments; stone from Figueres, for the socles and handrails of the staircases in the crypt, and the ull de serp, or snake eye, granite from the Maresme, for the steps of the staircases in the crypt.
