Polishing (burnishing)
Making a stone smooth or shiny by rubbing it with harder, abrasive materials. According to the type of stone it is possible to achieve a more elaborate degree of polishing, giving it a greater shine. Not all stones allow the same polishing.
Pumicing
Leaving a stone material fine without polishing by rubbing with pumice stone. Basically sedimentary rocks (Montjuïc, Floresta) are pumiced.
Refining
Fine finish obtained today by cutting with the following tools: a disc or wire saw.
Rasping or scraping
Working or rubbing a surface with the scraper or rasp to give it a finished texture. It is only done with soft stones.
Claw chiselling
Working a surface with the claw chisel, such as the edges or corners of a stone element.
Hammering
Chipping a stone surface with a stone mason's hammer to obtain a slightly dotted engraving.
Punching
Punching a stone surface with a chisel to obtain an engraving with a high relief.
Stippling
Giving a rough texture in high relief by chipping the good side of an ashlar with a scutch chisel.
